A project with the goal of placing a high-quality houseboat using affordable and sustainable materials.
How do you create an affordable houseboat with a premium look using sustainable construction materials? Project developer Schipperbosch formed a project-based design team, including Collectief Soepel. The construction of the houseboat was carried out entirely in-house. From design and technical development to steelwork, timber frame construction, and wall finishing, this required an integrated approach. Every design step took this into account.

The mooring location of this houseboat presented several challenges. Due to its position relative to the river, the houseboat may face strong waves, occasionally resting on the riverbed, and of course, freezing conditions in the winter. This necessitated a stiff and reliable steel structure. This approach made it possible to lift the entire houseboat, allowing the complete construction to take place next to the workshop. Efficient, as it saves a lot of time and fuel.
The facade is finished with Fraké Eco-panels, made from preserved wood offcuts, and the green cladding and countertop are made from Gogo Plastics, a material containing 100% recycled plastic.
Inside the houseboat, mostly standard construction materials were used for the finishing. This requires extra attention and care during the build. Aligning the panels and ensuring that the wood batch is suitable for exposed finishes becomes important. Once this is well-planned, construction moves quickly!
